Abstract
The authors reported a case of steroid psychosis. The patient was a 61-year old male, who became psychotic after taking 60 mg prednisone for 5 days for his "pericardial effusion".
The main symptom manifestations were elated and irritable mood which was accompanied by delusional ideas and auditory hallucination. At the time of psychiatric consultation, there was no other significant abnormal physical and laboratory findings, including brain G-T and electroencephalogram.
For the management of his psychiatric symptoms, prednisone was discontinued and small dose of haloperidol 1.5 mg tid daily was administered with which he returned to his previous mental status without any complications.
In the clinical point of view, the physicians who
prescribe steroid must be alert to this type of "steroid psychosis" as a potential psychiatric complication during the course of steroid treatment.
